Up until recent times there was little or no restriction on the content of fashion jewellery. In short, manufacturers were free to use almost any base metal for the ear post and clips of your jewellery. The most popular addition to any piece of costume jewellery came within the plating process, and whether the article in question was to be silver or gold plated made little difference; the one common element in all plating of jewellery  was – the use of  ‘Nickel’.

Nickel was added to enhance the shine of the earrings or necklet. Unfortunately it was a well documented fact that in certain cases the addition of nickel could cause an allergic skin reaction. Exact figures were never collated as to how many people this process actually affected, but that didn’t stop the Eurocrats from acting with vigour. Soon the ‘Boys in Brussels’ declared that all earrings, necklets, rings and brooches, in fact – any fashion jewellery or accessory that came in contact with the surface of the skin must be ‘Nickel free’.

So to sum up -  now, when you buy your fashion earrings or that pretty necklet, by and large they should be nickel free. This however doesn’t mean that all ear-care stops there – Oh No !There is still a basic hygiene code you should adhere to if you want to avoid future problems. This is where BACKS is on hand to help. Our Product range of replacement earring backs, clip pads, sterile studs and anti-allergenic solution has over the past fifteen years helped people manage their jewellery wearing problems. Available widely throughout retail outlets in  the U.K. The Backs Earcare  Products range is now available direct for your convenience.

Bullet Backs: A gold plated bullet shaped earring clutch / butterfly, very secure and discreet – ideal for all earring types.

Hypo Backs: As above – but once again made from high grade polymer making them non- reactive and ultra discreet.

Slip On Pads: A universal comfort pad to ease the ear-pinch felt with some jewellery. Simply slip the polymer sleeve over the arm of the earring clip and you jewellery is ready to wear.

Ear Clear Solution: This little bottle is probably the most important item in your jewel box. The solution is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-septic. Ideal for sensitive earlobes newly pierced ears and the general cleansing of earrings, necklets, bangles, and all forms of body jewellery (see separate section).

PROBLEMS AND SOME SOLUTIONS.

I don’t want to worry you but that little hole in your ear lobe never technically heals-up.

Think about it – if it did – you wouldn’t be able to wear you earrings! That’s not to say that your body’s defences won’t protect you by closing the opening around the piercing but it does need a little help from you. True, there have always been people who could wear a rusty nail with little reaction, where others only have to scratch themselves to feel genuine pain or irritation. I think it is therefore safe to say that a degree of cleansing and maintenance can do no harm and will probably help avoid some of the more unpleasant reactions that can happen from time to time.

Q    I am wearing nickel free earrings but still get irritation after a short while of wearing them.A    Your body cycle changes every seven years or so,  just as you could once run a hundred yards in 16 seconds, now that may not be possible. So it is with your body, your PH balance may have altered causing an acidic reaction. Similar symptoms may be due to medication – eg. sulphur based drugs. Try using Ear clear Solution on both, the earring post, earring backs and ear-lobes. If the symptoms persist, change to clip earrings or try sterile studs for a short while, this way you will keep your piercings open. If your problems persist – consult your G.P.

Q  My earrings feel heavy and move about more than they should.

A  Somewhere in you jewellery-wearing past you have probably followed a trend for heavy or large earring. Worn over a period of time without the correct support they have literally stretched the holes. Change to an earring back with a built –in disc for support. Supabacks or Polymer Supabacks will help, they won’t return your earlobes to their former glory but they should arrest any further stretchingQ  I am still getting irritation even if I wear gold jewellery – why?                                                                                                           A  The only pure gold is 24ct . Because ‘Pure Gold’ is too soft it needs to be strengthened with an alloy – the more alloy the jewellery contains the lower the carat rating eg. 9ct is the hardest wearing gold, 22ct is the softest and by definition the most pure. If you are having trouble with gold try wearing a higher carat rating, say 18ct. Once again don’t forget to sterilize your earrings, this may be enough for short periods of wear.

Q  My ear lobes are sore when I wear clip earrings.

A  This one really is very simple, use a clip pad. This simple action will reduce the ear pinch caused by some of the more aggressive ear-clips.

Q  How often should I change my earring backs.

A  In an ideal world about every 3 months, a more realistic answer would be look at them closely – do they look past their sell-by date? If so discard them – after all you wouldn’t wear an article of clothing for six months without washing it would you? Remember these earring backs are next to your skin, in some cases  24 – 7. Go on Throw Them Away!

Q  I can’t wear fashion or gold earrings without irritation.

A  For reasons previously stated you have a severe allergic reaction try either a sterile stud like Hypo Studs, they are piercing quality and are therefore about as non-reactive as you can get . If this solution doesn’t appeal, try sterling silver, ounce for ounce it’s purer than 18ct gold.

Remember that regular cleansing of both the earring posts, clips and ear lobes can only help prevent infection and aids comfort.

BODY JEWELLERY

The popularity in the wearing of body jewellery is something nobody could have predicted. Sad to say, the information with regard to care of both the piercings and the jewellery itself has not kept pace. Body piercing has been carried out on almost every part of the body from the face to, shall we say, more private parts. All these piercings have one thing in common –THEY MUST BE CLEANSED!

There really is no substitute for regular cleansing. Backs Ear Clear solution is ideal for cleansing all types of body jewellery. It’s antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties cleanse and coat to avoid infection and irritation. The solution is best used on ear lobes and although it will not harm other pierced body parts, its immediate effects are a little too aggressive for use on sensitive areas.(For External Use Only).

Pearls have always had a special place in a woman’s heart. Agreed, they are not as glamorous as diamonds. And no, they may not be as alluring as gold. But pearls have an innate, mysterious charm that simply cannot be resisted. Their subdued beauty, lustrous mystique and quiet glow make them a must-have in a woman’s jewelry box.

Of the different varieties of pearls available, the South Sea Pearl is perhaps the most revered and coveted. The reasons for this are many. Natural South Sea pearls are rare. South Sea Pearls grow to admirable proportions and it is, simply put, the best looker in the pearl family! Since South Sea Pearls are expensive and rare, many women prefer to buy a good-sized south sea pearl pendant, instead of opting for a rope of pearls. For one thing, getting a dozen or more South Sea Pearls of the same size and shape is in itself a rarity. Add to that the cost and maintenance factor, and you can easily see why South Sea pearl pendants make sense.

South Sea pearl pendants come in many sizes, shapes and colors. In most cases, you will have a single big pearl nestled in a base of silver, gold or platinum. This setting, when combined with the proper attire, can really up your style quotient, making you look elegant, expensive and sophisticated at the same time. In fact, simple sophistication is a trademark of pearl jewelry.

If you own South Sea Pearl pendants, or any other pieces of jewelry containing South Sea Pearls, you need to pay special attention to how to take care of these rare pearls. Here are a few tips that will help you take proper care of your South Sea Pearl pendants.

In general, pearls have a soft surface. They may be easily marred, scratched or damaged if they are tossed with hard items in a jewelry box. Store your South Sea Pearls in cotton and keep them in a separate pouch.

One advantage of having south sea pearls in the pendant form is the limited contact these pearls have with your skin. When pearls are laid on bare skin, they tend to absorb the acid from the skin. Over time, pearls that are exposed to the skin will lose their luster and shape. If you feel that your pendant may be in danger of absorbing your sweat, then, make it a point to wipe the pearl with a damp cloth from time to time. You may also wipe them with slightly salty water from time to time.

South sea pearl pendants are very sensitive to acidic solutions like perfumes and vinegar. So, always keep your pearls away from the deteriorating influence of harsh chemicals. Hold your pendant by their metal part, so that the pearl is safe from any chemicals or dirt sticking to your hand. Also, remember that pearls can wear away quickly when exposed to heat.

To clean your south sea pearl pendants, use jewelry cleaners that are specifically for pearls. Steam cleaners, detergents, bleaches, baking soda and ammonium-based cleaners are all taboo on pearls. Do not clean pearls with abrasive materials like a scrubber or a toothbrush. Wear your pendant only after you have finished applying makeup and spraying perfume or Deo. Check the clasp and the pearl seating of your pendant from time to time.

Pearls have been a favorite with men and women since times immemorial. In the past, you had Rajas and Maharajas wearing elaborate pearl jewelry. These days, you can see portraits of rich kings, princes and ladies adorned with beautiful pearl jewelry. Among the different kinds of pearls, white pearl jewelry is by far the most common and the most popular. Even today, you find a large majority of consumers opting for white pearl jewelry.

To a large extent, tradition and culture have played an important role in the predominance of white pearl jewelry. Most Christian weddings have brides and bridesmaids adorned with strands of white pearls, even though a lot of this jewelry is fake. White pearls have come to symbolize purity, truth and innocence. They stand for longevity and faithfulness, which explains why white pearls are quite common in engagement rings and anniversary pendants.

Before cultured pearls overtook the market, almost all pearls were white, rose or cream. White pearl jewelry is popular because of its natural iridescence, luster and purity. White pearls are more abundant and are therefore less expensive, particularly when compared with their rose or gold cousins.

White pearls are generally freshwater pearls. You also find white pearls among South Sea Pearls. These white pearls grow to amazing sizes, sometimes touching 15 mm or more in diameter. White South Sea Pearls have a satiny luster, which makes them look sophisticated and elegant. White Akoya pearls are more common and they are what most people mean when they talk about white pearl jewelry. Akoya pearls are smaller, near round and perfect in shape. They are easily farmed, so abundantly available.

The most common item made using white pearls is the white pearl necklace. The most common styles for these are choker, rope, opera, matinee and princess. White pearls can go naturally with any other gemstone or metal. So, you can combine them nicely with gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. Whether you use them alone or in combination with other gems, white pearl jewelry looks stunning. Since white pearls come in all sizes, women of all ages can use them. Generally, young women and girls use small to medium pearls, while older women prefer larger pearls. In the past, the size of the pearl worn by a woman reflected her status and marital status. This tradition has seeped into the modern age.

White pearls are very popular because they easily complement any style or dress. You can wear them to the office or to a disco, and still look cool. But you must choose the right kind of pearl color for your skin tone if you want to get maximum mileage from your pearl jewelry. So, people with darker skin tones prefer creamy tones, while those with fair skin tones opt for cooler tones. However, white pearl jewelry is so common and such a unanimous favorite that all women love wearing it regardless of age and skin tone.

Like buying diamonds, one normally looks for four Cs – cut, carat, color and clarity. Diamonds or gemstones when mined have very less values but when cut, shaped and polished to bring color brilliance, it adds to the beauty and fetches more values. Pearls on the other hand are purely natural gems and there are various factors for evaluating the pearl quality.

Pearls are natural gems and are products of living organisms. Beauty of pearls is known all over and dazzled all women around the world from celebrities to regular women. Pearls once were the prized collections of rich royal families have now become affordable by everyone. Natural pearls are rarity now and all pearls sold in U.S or abroad are all cultured pearls and they are equally lustrous and beautiful.

Cultured pearls are grown in pearl farms mostly in Far Eastern Regions of the world and come in various types such as freshwater pearls, akoya or seawater pearls, Tahitian pearls from French Polynesian islands and South Sea pearls from Australia and Indonesia. The most affordable are freshwater pearls and next comes the akoya pearls.

Pearl is the only gem created by a living organism – primarily mollusks such as oysters. Pearls are composed of between 82-86% mineral (calcium carbonate), 10-14% organic binder and 2-4% water. Cultured pearls techniques was first invented by a Japanese man known as Mikimoto in early 20th Centuries and with modern culturing techniques, it has now become feasible to produce better quality pearls and demand for pearl jewelry is growing every year and it is hard to find any woman not having pearl jewelry in the wardrobe. Pearls are charming and look very gracious when worn with any kind of dress from casual to party or evening outfits.

Value of any type of pearls is determined by several factors; which are pearl nacre, pearl luster, pearl size, pearl color, pearl surface etc. Luster is the prime consideration as no one would like to wear pearl jewelry made with dull luster pearls even if it is very cheap. It’s worth investing in good quality pearl jewelry that can be passed on from generation to generation.
